As the hurricane approached Venice, our community’s response showed the true meaning of Jewish unity. Before the storm hit, text messages flew back and forth between community members, sharing locations and contact information to ensure everyone would be accounted for once the storm passed.

The hurricane’s timing, just before Yom Kippur, could have disrupted our holiest day of prayer. But thanks to advance preparation and a generator, our community didn’t miss a beat. “Being able to come together for Yom Kippur services, despite the widespread power outages, gave us all strength,” shared one community member. “It felt like a powerful reminder that our Jewish community stays strong no matter what challenges we face.”

The true spirit of our community revealed itself in the days following the storm. Our WhatsApp group buzzed with messages — some offering help, others identifying those in need. Community members with power opened their homes to those without, sharing meals and providing charging stations for phones.

The distribution of food and water became a community effort, with volunteers helping to identify and reach out to those in need. When our Sukkah-mobile made its rounds through Venice neighborhoods, children’s faces lit up with joy, and families celebrated together despite the challenging circumstances.

One mother noted, “My kids were feeling scared after the storm, but seeing the Sukkah-mobile coming down our street brought back their smiles. It reminded us that our Jewish community is here for each other, no matter what.”

The hurricane may have disrupted our daily routines, but it strengthened our bonds as a community. From checking on elderly neighbors to sharing resources, from praying together to celebrating Sukkot in unique ways, our Venice Jewish family demonstrated what community truly means.

As we move forward, we’re inspired by how our community members continue to support one another, proving that together, we can weather any storm.
